The Mitaki Peace Tour begins at the Rest House, located within Peace Memorial Park. Our meeting point is directly in front of the historical marker for the A-bombed building, situated to the left of the entrance facing the Motoyasu River.
A Silent Witness to History
The Rest House is the second closest A-bombed building to the hypocenter. Originally constructed in March 1929, it served as the Taishoya Kimono Shop headquartered in Osaka.
Resilience Through Architecture
Following the Great Kanto Earthquake of 1923, the earthquake resistance of reinforced concrete structures drew significant national attention. The Taishoya building is a reinforced concrete building with three above-ground floors and one basement floor. It was designed as a modern, sturdy fortress with minimal window openings.
When the atomic bomb was dropped, this robust construction became the stage for a miracle. Although the roof’s structural components were crushed, the beams and floors were damaged, and the entire interior (except for the basement) was gutted by fire, the building’s core remained standing. Today, preserved and restored, it continues to serve the city as the Rest House.
